WEEKEND PREVIEWS - Not including USAT AG Nationals, Minnesota multisporters have five triathlons to choose from this weekend, the largest of which is Sunday's YWCA WOMEN'S TRI, which has drawn 1700ish participants for its 10th anniversary celebration. The race is full, though a small number of "Charity Bibs" may still be available (RACE WEBSITE)....

Here's some observations about last weekend's races:
- GRANITEMAN BIG LAKE - For the MTN Guys, the highlight of this year's Big Lake races was that three of the four overall champs were first-time winners, though we were not surprised by this. The Olympic-distance race was won by RYAN COLLISON, a Graniteman veteran and perennial Top 5 finisher, and KATHERINE JOHNSON, who podiumed at G-Man Clearwater in 2017, a breakout season for her.
Joining BRIAN STORHAUG in the Winners Circle in the Sprint race was EMILY GAGE (photo below), last year's runner-up at this event. In '17, she finished 2nd behind Junior of the Year-to-be TAYLOR LUNDQUIST. This time around, that order was flip-flopped.
Gage's 2nd place effort at Minneapolis Sprint in mid-July suggested that her first career multi win would come sooner than later.
FYI - Storhaug was also victorious at the last two editions of Clearwater Sprint. RESULTS

Wade Cruser and Elaine Nelson took decidedly different paths to the 32nd annual Brewhouse Triathlon on Sunday morning at Island Lake.
Men's champ Cruser awoke at 3 a.m. for the 160-mile drive from his home in Sauk Rapids, Minn., which took the 31-year-old about two and a half hours....

JULY ATHLETES OF THE MONTH - Which Minnesota triathletes rocked out the hardest in July?
The competition for some of these acknowledgements was stiff in some categories, especially overall ATHLETES OF THE MONTH. There were other categories where it was hard to find an athlete that meets the basic criteria, i.e. at least TWO performances that uphold current elite performance standards. Men's MASTER OF THE MONTH and men's GRAND MASTER OF THE MONTH are examples of this. KEVIN O'CONNOR, 47, and DAVID HOLDEN, 49, for instance, each turned in one truly outstanding performance in July, KO at Chisago Sprint and Holden at Minneapolis Olympic. If they had only entered one more race....
So, here are our picks for MALE and FEMALE OVERALL JULY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: SEAN COOLEY, 32, St. Paul & HANNA GRINAKER, 28, St. Paul (photo L)
Sean raced three times in July, winning the prestigious Minnespolis Triathlon, then placing 2nd at Heart of the Lakes and Chisago Half. There were two HMs in the men's AOM: JORDAN ROBY, winner at Timberman and Turtleman, and KRIS SPOTH, winner at Heart of the Lakses Sprint and 2nd at Minneapolis....
