GRANITEMAN CLEARWATER - Mercurial Wade Cruser collected his fourth win of the season at Big Lake Sprint last Sunday. He was fast, too. A 1:01:49. He probably didn't know that Marcus Stromberg's 2010 race record was only one second faster. Had he had this info, he may have been able to drop another second or two along the way.
In any case, Wade's effort was remarkable.
Also remarkable was the fact that he was able to stay ahead of eventiual runner-up Casey Miller, who has been hot lately. Casey had posted three consecutive Ws in the weeks leading up to Big Lake.
As he did at the Clearwater, the second of the three race Graniteman Series that culminates at Big Lake, 45-year-old former scrummer Greg Dummer placed 3rd overall.
The Big Lake Olympic Tri, in its sophomore year, was won handily by David Holden, whose 2:00:52 bettered the 2015 CR by 2:53, and Kelly Trom, who also CRed. Her time was a goodie: 2:16:48....

WASECA SPRINT - Our state's newest pro, Daniel Bretscher, raced for the first time on MInnesota soil last Saturday at the 8th annual Waseca Sprint.
He won.
The transplanted Hoosier-turned-Iowan-now-Loon-Stater, who resides in Northfield where his wife coaches track at St. Olaf College, covered the new sprint route--the swim and bike were lengthened--in 1:10:38. Very solid. Coming off an extended injury--Waseca was his first multisport race of the 2016 season--the amiable former US Athlete of the Year (2007) and 2014 Ironman Wisconsin winner, was pleased with his effort.
Finishing 2nd was the men's amateur winner Brooks Grossinger (1:11:27), who now has at least 28 multisport victories on his career scorecard....

Turtleman Race Report - My long course experiment was over after Chisago and I was keen to get back to what I love - sprints and olympics. The Turtleman caught my eye on minnesotatrinews.com as a race with easy 90 minute drive from Rochester. The race was reasonably priced (even as a late registration) and the forecast looked great. I looked at this race as a great way to get the feel for an olympic before, what will be one of my two last and "A" races this year, Des Moines olympic. My only other olympics were Trinona and nationals a couple of years ago.
It was a nice drive and parking for the event was very close. It was pleasant to have high 60's temps first thing in the morning after all the heat and...
