NORTHWOODS TRIATHLON COVERAGE - Retired star triathlete BRIAN BICH was an eleven-time winner of the Brewhouse Triathlon. TONY SCHILLER has won two races--Heart of the Lakes and Lake Waconia--more than ten times each. JAN GUENTHER, CATHY YNDESTAD and ELAINE NELSON have come very close to doing so as well. Still, the Minnesota triathlete who has more victories at a single race is BROOKS GROSSINGER, who just won the Northwoods Triathlon for the eighteen time last Saturday.
Granted, Brian, Tony, Jan, Cathy and Elaine have double-digit wins, or almost so, at events that are among the most competitive races in our state, while Northwoods' excellence is not based on its competitiveness. Still, eighteen wins at a single race, eighteen wins in eighteen starts no less, is herculean. It demands that the athlete not be injured and that his or her bike is always sound....

One way to determine the most successful athletes is to keep track of the prize money they earn. Of course, this is only part of the total money athletes can make, as there are no reliable figures on sponsorship or appearance money. Also the numbers shown are earnings before expenses, and there are a lot of things such as travel, camps, coaching, or physio that have to be paid from this same pot of cash—it’s not pure profit for a pro. And while the numbers look nice and have grown considerably since the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) has entered the scene, there is still a lot of headway before we reach “golf levels”—where Rory McIlroy, the top 2022 prize money earner, made more than $44 million. That’s nearly three times the amount of prize money available to all pros, of all genders, at all distances!

NORTHWOODS PREVIEW - Can BROOKS GROSSINGER win Northwoods for the 18th time. Of course he can. At age 46, can he continue to cover the scenic route in under 60 minutes. Sure. Is there anyone in the field that can challenge him this year? Is there anyone who also can break the 1-hour mark?
Maybe.
The last time someone other than Brooks broke 60-minutes was in 2018. That athlete was Jordan Roby, who was one of triathlon's pandemic casualties, i.e. one who transferred to a single sport, in his case, distance running.
So who will be his toughest opponent next Saturday? Last year's. runner-up BRANDON LEE, a North Dakota transplant now residing in Lino Lakes...
