Going Off Course - Like tens, perhaps, hundreds of other people who were conscious in the 70s, Minneapolis triathlete Amy Bauch totally adores Todd Rundren's music. (FYI, so do we!) She even owns an "Official" limited edition Todd Rundgren bobble-head (photo L), which she purchased at one of the 200-or-so small-venue TR concerts that she has attended over the last 35 years. It's really cool. Amy is one of eight people who own this particular treasure.
Why does Amy like Rundgren's progressive rock/pop/slightly proto-punk stuff so much? We suspect it's because she listens with her heart, which does not mean that she doesn't also listen with her ears. She does that, too.
What is "Heart Listening," you ask? We're not sure, but we suspect that one has to be into romantic stuff before they can do it, that way their hearts can metaphorically be "touched" or even "melted" by romantic lyrics and melodies. Heart Listeners think that love and romance is good....

Winter Speed Work
Today is the first day of November and I'm officially starting to work my way back into training. Naturally you might assume that means that I'm building my mileage back up and getting ready to do lots of aerobic work and put in some foundational miles. Surprise! I plan on doing no such thing this winter. The next four or so months I'll be focused on technique work and low mileage with a lot of speed. This probably seems counter-intuitive, especially if you're used to the standard periodization model that most coaches and online programs prescribe. But I think most people are making a big mistake spending their off-season slogging through lots of mileage. So I've cobbled together this semi-rambling, pseudo-coaching slash training philosophy post to give you some food for thought.....

Season Finale

The 2012 season is over. Here are all the important events that have occurred since August:
-Rev3 Maine: Wonderful trip, really nice place for a race. Not a dazzling performance. Dropped in the swim, rode ok, rough run. Was humbled to see a true bike monster in action, I rode a mediocre 56 and Conrad Stoltz crushed a 52! Consolation: lobster.
-Mustache Relay: put together an all star cast of mustachioed athletes for a relay at the St Croix Olympic. We won. It was fun. I rode 55:11 on a super, super dicey course. There will be several of relay opportunities in 2013 so keep a few of your weekends open....
