MINNESOTA MULTISPORT AWARDS - Here are the winners of the 2019 MOST IMPROVED honors:
Women Nominees: JENNA HORNER, JENNIFER FITZHARRIS-FUNK, JESSIE MAHER, RACHEL ZILINSKAS
WINNER: RACHEL ZILINSKAS
While it was obvious that Maher demonstrated the most "actual" improvement in 2019, two of the other three nominees--Horner and Zilinskas--posted the kind of results that would land them officially on Team Minnesota, with Fitzharris-Funk coming darn close to doing so, as well. Horner won two races and excelled in sprint and OLympic races, but Zilinkas demonstrated, in the opinion of three of the five Selectors, more versatility, racing admirably at half and full IM, as well as Olympic distance. Her 2nd place finish at Minneapolis in 2:08:46 was the kicker, though. That kind of speed is rare....

By Mike Buenting (mikebuenting.wordpress.com - posted 11/13)
Yesterday November 13th was National Signing day for high school athletes to sign national letters of intent to attend a college and compete in sport. This is always a very exciting day and schools around the country do big ceremony’s and then the college that the athlete is attending sends out announcements of excitement that so and so will be attending that college to compete in the sport they do.
Here in Minnesota the Star Tribune newspaper posted a list of all the athletes in Minnesota that were signing yesterday and on that list was my daughter Bella Buenting a Minnetonka High school senior. What is unique about Bella is that she was the only athlete listed under the sport of Triathlon and too be honest I don’t know of any other athletes in Minnesota (well actually maybe one 2 years ago as I think Taylor went off for NCAA Triathlon) So in the state of Minnesota it’s rare to see an athlete sign for the sport of Triathlon! I mean Triathlon is not even a high school sport here in Minnesota, but I would love to change that! ...
Happy Thanksgiving from MTN!

MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - Today we reveal the male and female MASTER OF THE YEAR and the GRAND MASTER OF THE YEAR:
Female MOY Nominees: KORTNEY HAAG, DIANE HANKEE, CATHY YNDESTAD, BECKY YOUNGBERG
WINNER: BECKY YOUNGBERG
Without question, 2019 produced the most talented assemblage of female MOY nominees ever. Hankee won four races and claimed three other regional podiums. Haag won two of the four races she entered and placed 2nd in the other two. Yndestad set three course records and one of her efforts is a POY finalist.
Youngberg, however, had nine outstanding triathlon performances in 2019, including three outright victories, two course records and two national titles. All five Selectors favored Youngberg as MOY.
Like CY, Becky is a TOY finalist...

MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - In the past, we announced all of the MMH winners in a single post, then discussed the selection process of the individual honoreess in follow-up articles. We're doing it a little differently this year. We're announcing the winners of a couple of categories at a time, and explaining the five-member Committee's rationale for the selections.
Today we are revealing the winners of the ROOKIE OF THE YEAR and JUNIOR OF THE YEAR categories.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR nominees: STEVEN DECKERT, CARYN HERRICK, CONNOR LISOWSKI and PAIGE SCHULZ
ROY WINNER: PAIGE SCHULZ
Four of the five Selectors favored Paige, based largely on her brilliant long distance results. Rookies aren't supposed to podium a big-time races like the Chisago Half IM, where she popped a 4:42:17, and more significantly at Ironman Mont-Tremblant, where she finished 3rd among amateur women in 10:09:16.
Receiving the support of one Committee member was Herrick, who excelled in short course races, as well as turning in great results at half IM. Her win at Hopkins Royal, and her 3rd at Heart of the Lakes, were the kind of highlights that reminded us of former ROYs, Nicole Heininger (2013) and Suzie Fox (2009)....
