The Meat and Potato’s.
I am deeming this section the meat and potatoes of the season. These are races on the schedule that I’ve done before (mostly) at a distance I’ve done many times before. There are two goals surrounding these races – executing them with a high level of precision and figuring out what I am good at course wise. These races are: ...
- Ironman Texas 70.3 – April 11th
- Ironman St. George 70.3 – May 1st.
- Ironman Des Moines 70.3 – June 20th.
Goal one of these races is to execute them to the best of my ability- using everything I’ve learned over each passing race when it comes to prep, equipment, travel habits, and race strategy. In 2019 we did a similar tour of races during my first year racing in the pro field. I had no idea what to expect and this was more of a jump into the deep end and see what happens approach. After a season and a couple races in 2020, I now know how competitive the elite field is. It’s a completely different race than the AG wave and I’m now in a better place mentally for what to expect.
Goal two is new this year – figuring out how I stack up against the competition when it comes to the various types of courses. We’ll see a large dichotomy in the first part with Texas being flat as a pancake and St. G not having a flat piece of earth within miles and Des Moines being a mix of both. I’ll have no biased going into these types of course and we can see how the chips fall after. This is a long term goal, but putting this mission into orbit is important for the development as me as an athlete and what races to target in future years.
Going Long-er
I found my love and affinity with long course racing back in 2016. With a half hazard training plan through my senior year of college, I signed up for my first 70.3 ten days before on a whim and ended up winning the race overall. The last four years have been nothing but 70.3s on the calendar and now we’re at a point where it’s time to go move up into the full distance. The best part is, I have no idea what to expect. It’s a new adventure just like my first 70.3.
I’ll be hoping to do so at Ironman Wisconsin if they have a pro men’s field. It’s close to home and I’ve watched in awe as friends compete in Madison it for years. Additionally, I’ll be able to make a few trips over to the area for rides around the course. If they do not have a pro wave or if it gets cancelled, I’ll be going south for IM Chattanooga. Whatever the case, we’ll be ready and I cannot wait for the challenge.
2021 is going to be a great year for racing. If anything this blog post will be a great reference for my folks when it comes to my race schedule. If someone else is reading this beside mom & dad and you need help with getting started in this sport, please reach out. I am happy to help and am sure Dani and I might have some extra equipment lying around if you need to borrow anything. And a huge thank you to the people supporting me in 2021 – Odom Health, Gear West, Dimond Bikes & UCAN. We’ll see you at the races!
