Proud of His Wife...

renee-burton.gifBy David Burton

Renee Gittens grew up west of the Cities in Rockford and trained with her high school cross country team in the Lake Rebecca Park reserve that Liberty Tri takes place in now.  Renee also competed in Gymnastics and Track.  She always wanted to compete in the pole vault but they didn’t let girls do that in the 80’s.

Renee  (photo) and her Cross Country team competed at the small school cross country state championship her senior year in High School. During the winter of the same year, she suffered a badly torn ACL during a gymnastics training session that doctors told her would end her running career.

Flash forward 20 years and the pain in her knee had her back at the orthopedic surgeons office just hoping to walk normally again. The doctor told her that if she was willing to work hard at her rehab she would not only be able to walk – she could run if she wanted.

At that time Renee, now Renee Burton, and I were both about 40 lbs overweight but we were ready to make a change and over the next 5 years Renee and I worked our way from walking around the block to running around it – eventually competing in local 5k races.   She started picking up age group awards that reinforced her motivation and kept us training....

A Voyage of Rediscovery...

Four years ago, I was done competing in triathlons.  I had had enough. After 15+ years of delightfully competing I was tired. I wanted gin and tonics instead of gatorade, a mocha with whip cream instead of a bike ride. It did not help that I landed in the hospital after a terrible infection manifested by a mucky lake swim, Fearing the infection was serious enough to take my life, I decided if and when I recovered I would get my goals realigned and finish some things I have always wanted to do. In that was the desire to be a USAT coach. I had been a teacher for 19 years in Minneapolis School and decided I could use my talents to teach willing and excited adults about the world of triathlons.  These “students” have taught me to love the sport again.

First, take a 40-some athlete who turned to me in hopes of learning about the sport. He had recently lost more than 50 lbs and always dreamt of doing a triathlon, but was too scared.  He did not know...

Battle of the Brands...

kona-swim.gifBy Frederick Dreier (online.wsj.com)

The Ironman triathlon coming to Chattanooga, Tenn., in September sold out 2,500 slots in under a minute.

The Hits triathlons feature races exactly as demanding: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. The events have averaged just 30 registrants this year.

It's hard to see much difference between the two beyond the logo.

As Ironman races swell in popularity in North America with more weekend warriors competing, rival races are popping up. They are finding, though, that it can be hard to attract competitors without the name Ironman, even with lower entry fees. Meanwhile, the Ironman series, run by World Triathlon Corp., which owns the Ironman trademark, has ballooned to 35 global races, many with waiting lists....
