Lake Minnetonka X - David Thompson's son Anders, pronounced "Onders," just turned one and is already a fast runner. No kidding. He talks, too, but not a lot. He doesn't understand money yet, so he didn't buy his dad a Father's Day present. David's wife, Hannah Sullivan, doubtlessly bought him something, home improvement stuff probably, and probably told her husband that Anders "helped me pick it out."
The stuff that Hannah and her fast running, occasionally talking, but not too much, son got David was not given to him until last Sunday. On Saturday, though, which was "Father's Day Eve," he received a lot of cool stuff courtesy of the Lake Minnetonka Triathlon. It was like opening all but one of your gifts on Christmas eve, saving ...
the big special gift, the one from Santa, or in this case, Hannah with the negligible help of Anders, on Christmas morning.
What did DKT receive on Saturday, you ask? He got a trophy the size of a pony, a bottle of Bacardi rum and gift certificates for good stuff.
Like most gifts, these were the kind that had to be earned. Like the home-improvement gift he would receive the next day, which he earned by impregnating his lovely wife, or the annual one he earns for surviving another year, Thompson earned his pony-sized trophy and booze by winning the 10th edition of the Lake Minnetonka Triathlon.
He totally earned his reward by leading, as expected, from start to finish, and setting a pro course record, 1:00:56, which proved to be 2:16 faster than the amateur CR, which was set in 2009 by four-time LMT winner Brett Lovaas, whose kids are now old enough to actually sorta help mom pick out Father Day gifts.
David's Winners Circle Mate was Heather Lendway, who is the fastest rising star on the Minnesota multisport scene. Heather's final time was an awesome 1:10:32, only 21 seconds off Cathy Yndestad's seemingly unapproachable 2012 women's record. And her margin over runner-up Catherine Lee was just under three minutes.
We hope that Heather shares her Bacardi, which means "Bat," rum with her dad, who has a leg injury and uses a crutch and probably takes NSAIDs by the handful. Eighty-proof alcoholic beverages, when consumed in large quantities, have a significant analgesic effect. If she does share her rum with her dad, she should not consider it her Father's Day gift as that would be a blatant example of re-gifting. Besides, her dad is such a cool
