Duathlon Nationals Race Report - It has been a long 10 months since I was hit by a pickup truck while cycling last June. Today (Saturday) was my first chance to race again since the accident. It has taken alot of patience and training to get back to just being able to participate.
I had the chance to compete in the USAT Duathlon National Championships today in South Carolina against the best athletes in the country.
I have to admit I was nervous and a little unsure of how the day would go, but as the day went on, the smile on my face grew even with the pouring rain and cold wind. I was having fun again.
Tonight we went to the awards. This year I moved up an age group for the World Championship qualifier and finished 4th....
Which means I was awarded a spot to represent our country as a part of "Team USA. I am looking forward to joining my wife Mary Deeg next year in Spain at the World Championships.
Thanks Coach D, Gear West Tri, Camp Gunther and all my friends and family for supporting me. RESULTS
ED. Here's what Jeff's awesome wife, MARY DEEG, posted on Facebook today (4/9):
What a weekend!!!
Feeling grateful for the opportunity to race against the TOP athletes in America at the USAT Duathlon Nationals which took place in Greenville, SC.
Jeff Gilmer and Mary Deeg each raced the Draft Legal Sprint Du on Saturday and the Standard Du on Sunday...that’s called “doing the double”. What a thrill to do what we love and be top finishers representing Team USA with the opportunity compete at ITU Worlds in Spain April 27-May 4, 2019.
Jeff qualified in 60-64 Men
Draft Legal Sprint - 4th
Standard Du - 16th
Mary qualified in 55-59 Women
Draft Legal Sprint - 8th
Standard Du - 9th
Thanks to Gear West, Bicycle Chain, coaches, training buddies, our kids, family and friends.
