DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — U.S. professional triathlete Matt Hanson (Storm Lake, Iowa) placed second Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) 2020 Championship, held at the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Florida as part of CHALLENGEDAYTONA race weekend. The event drew more than 100 of the world’s best long- and short-course professional triathletes, all racing for a share of $1.15 million — the largest prize purse in triathlon history.

In addition to the PTO 2020 Championship, CHALLENGEDAYTONA featured various race distances and formats for age-group athletes, juniors and paratriathletes on Saturday and Sunday, as well as a Pro-Am Relay held Friday night under the lights at the NASCAR track....

The entire event was held with USA Triathlon’s Safe Return to Multisport protocols in place, including daily self-screening and temperature checks before entering the race venue; face coverings at all times except when actively racing; contact reduction for athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers; and increased cleaning and disinfecting practices onsite.

The PTO 2020 Championship featured the largest prize purse professional triathlon has ever seen at $1.15 million. The winners of the men’s and women’s races each received $100,000; second place earned $70,000; and third earned $50,000. All finishers down to 60th place received a minimum of $2,500.
