WINGMAN III (Do to course changes--the run was lengthened--all new records were set this year. Significantly, Dan Arlandson's 2011 winning time was almost a minute faster than his victorious clocking in 2010.) RESULTS
* CLAIRE'S WORDS - The YWCA Women's tri is a pretty unique event. I think this was the first year they have put on an elite wave, hopefully more elite women will race here next year so they can keep the competitive wave going. The awesome thing about no boys means that the lead woman gets to ride behind the lead out vehicle, what other race does a girl get to do that!? The environment was super supportive: the age group waves were cheering so loudly when I came out of the water, and tons of women headed out on the bike course while I was riding back in shouted things like 'you go girl' etc... Also there were inspirational pick me ups chalked all along the pavement of the course and little quote signs along the run. My two major motivators in this race were Kortney and breaking 1:10 in a sprint. I had hopes of breaking this time barrier at Manitou until the swim went way off course in that race (thanks Thadeus). I hadn't raced a healthy Kort before and it made me excited and nervous, but more excited to have such a great competitor in the race. Seeing both Ann and Kortney in T1 made me even more nervous because I knew they would be coming right behind me on the bike. I kept sneaking looks back over my shoulder trying to see where Kortney was. At mile 10 there was a turn around and I was able to locate the competition. I probably had 6-800 meters on Kortney with 5 miles to go and I was pretty confident that was enough cushion for me to get her on the run if she was able to catch up on the bike. Still having the lead heading into the run I told myself I had to work it the whole way to the finish to try and set a course record as low as I could go. I've fallen into a bad habit lately of being comfortable on the run and coasting on my running background if I don't have anyone to chase. I think I'm finally overcoming that downfall and I was able to put out a run that I'll admit I was working for. I had fun, felt good about the race, and feel ready heading into AG nationals next weekend. Couldn't ask for much more :) - Claire Bootsma
