Rabino, Gorman & Findlay Rock at College Nationals......

melanie-tattoo.gifCOLLEGIATE NATIONALS - Collegiate Sprint Nationals were staged last Friday in Tempe, Arizona. This highly-competitive Draft Legal race was won by Ian Boggs of Indiana University, whose dad, Bryan, was a former pro and for almost two decades was arguably Indiana's premier amateur triathlete, and Taylor Spivey of Cal Poly. Spivey, a tremendous swimmer, placed 2nd behind Heather Lendway at AG Nationals in Milwaukee last August and has her sights set on a pro career.

University of Minnesota athletes performed admirably on Friday. Leading the way for the Gopher Girls was Melanie Rabino (photo L), who placed 15th, and Jessica Findlay (Minneapolis), who placed 26th. Melanie has a tattoo and is dating a guy named Brad. She lived in France for a while and speaks three languages--English, French and Spanish. Musically, she's into The Lumineers and Mogli. She must be super cool because she read "The Pillars of the Earth," one of the greatest, and longest, historical novels ever.

We don't know much about Finlay, other than to note that she won the Collegiate Division at Life Time Maple Grove last year and knows Devon Palmer personally....

Ironman Los Cabos Race Report - IMs are such a blur of little moments you recall and slowly piece together, yesterday was a HOT, sweaty, and beautiful blur of memories, here are a few to share...

I loved hearing "Vamos Chica, Bueno Chica, and Vamos Vamos Vamos" yelled at me all day.

There was a language/product barrier with the sweet woman who was my T1 helper and she smeared a 1/4 of my container...

Rockin' the Baja...

im-logo.gifMTN congratulates Chaska's SUZIE FOX, who kicked off her 2014 tri season with a great performance last Sunday at Ironman Los Cabos on the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. Her time was 10:40:35, which placed her 6th overall among amateur women and 2nd in her 30-34 AG. The clocking is only two minutes off her personal best (10:38:38), set at Ironman Wisconsin in 2012. In Madison, Suzie enjoyed late season fitness and didn't have to contend with heat, yucky roads and suspicious food and water, stuff that is just part of the deal when one races in Mexico.

We've asked Suzie, who has been one of Minnesota's most successful and decorated multisporters since 2009, to file a race report. Her words will appear on MTN tomorrow.

Here is her IM Los Cab / IMOO split-comparision below:  ...

Fat & Febrile...

bonnie-birkie.gifBy Bonnie Hillwalker

This month I caught a fever. Not spring fever, a viral fever, or even Saturday night fever. A much deeper fever.

1973 was a great year. I was miticulously focused on the next horse my Barbie should ride. Should it be the black stallion? How about the thoroughbred, or even the Belgian? So many awesome choices! Horses were my everything. I left the skateboarding, Frisbee throwing and especially the skiing for somebody else. That makes sense for a little girl growing up in Newport Beach, California where snow was just something I saw in pretty, glass globes at Christmas time. My parents did not ski, my friends could barely even spell skiing, so when I finally did hit the slopes ten years later, let's just say that thankfully the man who's back I used as a crash pad on the intermediate slope, following my first semi-successful run down the beginner's slope, did not end up in the hospital. He ended up in the chalet. Without saying a word, he walked slouched

Pharmie's Let Herself Go...

anurag-jain.gifYWCA Indoor Tri #3 - Lotsa cool stuff happened last weekend at the YWCA Indoor Tri. Sixty-three finishers. Bob Thompson and Anne Grabowski repeated as overall winners in the Mega Sprint. Leslie Stanaway was the shortest and smiliest finisher in the overall Top 4 of the Sprint. And Anurag Jain, who placed 4th in the Mega, had the coolest name in the entire event. We're not sure how to pronounce it.

We looked up Anurag Jain on Facebook and learned that he is a guy, and that he's from Dehli, India. We also know that's he's been to Mount Rushmore (photo L) and Duluth, likes tennis, Robin Williams, nan and Chicken Tikka Masala....
