Minnesota Multisport Awards - Like the women's "Most Improved" category, wherein eight worthy women competed for four nominations, the men's Performance of Year nominees were exrtremely hard to determine. After much heated debate, here are the official men's Performance of the Year nominees:
BRIAN BICH (48, Duluth) - Bich made history with his Course Record win at Brewhouse, where he became the first athlete in Minnesota multisport history to win a single race 12 times. The old record, Tony Schiller's 11-wins at Lake Waconia, had stood for eleven years.
BROOKS GROSSINGER (37, Mayer) - Course record at Timberman. Brooks lowered his 2013 mark from 1:58:44 to 1:54:24. His margin of victory was 2:05.
MATTHEW PAYNE (36, Columbia Heights - photo) - With his Victory at the Best of the US Championship at Lake Phalen, The Pain Train became the first athlete in BOUS history to win more than once. He also won in 2011. Moreover, he beat 2013 US Athlete of the Year, Dan Stubleski, in the process....
MATTHEW PAYNE - Matt's Course Record victory--4:02:46--at the Liberty Half IM was accomplished under extreme conditions. The morning was cold, rainy and very windy. The event start was delayed and a significant portion of the field opted not to compete.
