Ten Truths of No-Bullshit Triathlon Training...
By Tom Demerly (tomdemerly.com)
Triathlon is big business now. With profits to earn and gadgets to sell how do you cut through the marketing haze and decide what really gets you to the finish line?
There are 2,377 books about triathlon on Amazon.com. An online seminar, a Facebook page and- bam, anyone is a triathlon coach. Add triathlon forums, that guy with an M-Dot tattoo dispensing advice and the amount of bullshit heaped on new triathletes is harder to cut through than the swim pack at Lake Placid....

When we think of Duluth's male multisport pioneers, we immediately think of Brian Bich, now 51, Rhett Bonner, now 53, and Rod Raymond, now 51. The most decorated of this triumvirate is Bich, a multiple national champion, former US Master of the Year and winner of nine MMAs. He is still very active, in fact, he won the MOY last year.
Bonner, a physician with movie star good looks--think Michael Fassbender (photo below)--, the guy who portrayed Steve Jobs--hasn't raced in a multi since 2014, though he remains an active and accomplished nordic skier.
Below are some of Bonner's triathlon highlights, which include his dominating AG victory at Nationals in 2009. (We will post Raymond's accomplishments tomorrow.)

CINCO DU MAYO PREVIEW - Yucky weather in the recent past makes folks reluctant to sign up for races in the near future. When this was written, temps were in the 30s and snowflakes the size of kumquats were falling out of the sky. But according to weather.com, an irrefutable source of unassailable information, the conditions in the Stillwater area, where the 10th edition of Cinco Du Mayo Long Course and 8th annual Cinco Sprint Du will be staged, will be borderline lovely next Saturday, when those races will be contested....

USAT LONG COURSE DUATHLON NATIONALS - MTN congratulates former US Duathlete of the Year JENN SCUDIERO, of Eagan, who likes to party (photo), on her awesome performance last weekend at Long Distance Du Nationals in hot, super humid, windy Cary, North Carolina. She placed 6th against a stellar field. Check out the Top 6:
- 1. DANIELLE DINGMAN (Branson, MO) - Rising star. Undefeated in three du starts in 2016.
- 2. KIRSTEN SASS (McKenzie, TN) - Two-time US Doy, three-time US TOY. Reigning World Du Champion.
- 3. DANI FISCHER (Indianapolis, IN) - 2014 US Duathlete of the Year who has the best dimples ever.
- 4. JAIME SIMMONS (Abingdon, VA) - Outstanding 70.3 credentials. Raced in one du in 2016 and won handily.
- 5. REBECCA KEFER, 16 (Kernersville, NC) - Outstanding prep distance runner with Div. I future. Raced in one prior du that we know of--at age 15--and won it....

FALLS DUATHLON - The MTN Guys were not at Falls Du this year. Bummer. We really love that race. So, tasked with posting some coverage, we went to Steve Stenzel's great blog site (lINK) to learn about the conditions, weather-wise, and to get a feel for the event. He didn't give us much in the way of climatology, but mentioned that it was breezy, though not hurricanic, as it has been in year's past. Studying all the great photos he posted, we'd guess that it wasn't a warm day, 30s-40s probably, and the clouds were as thick as cold oatmeal making for grey racing conditions...
We stated in our preview that we expected some late sign-ups to have an impact on the overall race. That was certainly the case on the men's side. 2016 Most Improved nominee Jordan Roby (photo below) was one those guys and he totally...
