USA Paratriathlon National Team member Melissa Stockwell was honored as the Women’s Sports Foundation’s 2013 Wilma Rudolph Courage Award winner on Wednesday at the organization’s Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Gala in New York, N.Y.

Melissa Stockwell is a three-time paratriathlon national and world champion in the TRI-2 division and was named USA Triathlon Paratriathlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011. A U.S. Army veteran, Stockwell became the first female American soldier to lose a limb in the Iraq war when her Humvee hit a roadside bomb in April 2004. She competed in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games as a swimmer before she discovered triathlon in 2009....

Triathletes can tolerate more pain than the rest of us, a new study confirms, which helps explain why they would swim, then bike, then run, all because they want to and not because they are, perhaps, being chased by a bear.

That’s interesting on its own, but there’s more: Researchers say that understanding how athletes can withstand the pain of a grueling endurance event may eventually lead to potential treatments and therapies for people with chronic pain.

“It’s a very masochistic sport,” said Jenna Parker, who was the top female finisher in the New York City...

CY-soma.gifLIFE TIME TRI-SOMA HALF - Cathy Yndestad turned in the fastest 70.3 time of the year by an amateur Minnesota woman last Sunday en route to a 14-minute victory at the Life Time Tri-Soma Half in Tempe, Arizona. Her time was 4:36:47 and the win was her 5th of the season and  #64 of her decorated career. Conditions were favorable (80-degrees, light wind and very low humidity) and her splits throughout were impressive (29:19-2:30:24-1:35:09).

 

2013 has been one of the most successful years ever for long distance racing by Minnesota women. Diane Hankee, Emily Kratz and Michelle Andres have already received official LDPOY (Long Distance Athlete of the Year) nominations and the MMA Selectors ....
