(Photo - Expert log-roller Christina Roberts hopes to chalk up her third consecutive Liberty Olympic victory on Saturday.)
Liberty Preview - A glance at the start list suggests to the MTN Guys that we could see a lot of recidivistic behavior at Lake Rebecca on Saturday. Last year's Liberty Olympic champs, David Holden and Christina Roberts, are coming back as favorites. We're anxious to see how absentee triathlete Dan Cohen fares, and we are expecting great efforts from Land Between the Lakes champ Chap Achen and Beth Guck (55-59W), who in hindsight deserved a Grand Master of the Year nomination last year. Beth plans to play "The Star Spangled Banner" on her bagpipes at a race this year. How cool is that!
We are also anxious to see Jen Martone because we like her a lot and haven't seen her in a while and she borrowed John Irving's "In One Person" from us a long time ago and hasn't returned it yet, so we're hoping she brings it to the race on Saturday....

(Photo - Transplanted Coloradan--we think?--Kjersten Buzek finished 4th on Saturday at New Bri, just three seconds out of third.)
New Bri VIII - Hilary Patzer collected her 5th career victory last Saturday at the 8th annual New Bri Tri. She finished 41 seconds ahead of runner-up Gillian Auslander and 1:15 ahead of podium rounder-upper Shelley Ostrander. Patzer, aka "Acupuncture Lady," and Auslander, who remains fiercely devoted to her collegiate Alma Mater, Auburn University (Go War Eagles!), finished 1-2 here in 2012, as well.
As predicted, the men's race for the top spot was a battle between 2010 Rookie of the Year runner-up, Sam Janicki, and 2012 ROY runner-up, Brian Sames. Sam prevailed by a 22-second margin thanks largely to a superior swim split and brisker transitions. Third place was earned by Gerard Butler lookalike Rossy Weinzierl.....

31st APPLE DUATHLON -- A PEACH OF A RACE
By Ben Ewers (benewers.blogspot.com)
Saturday May 25th had the running of the 31st APPLE DUATHLON in Sartell, Minnesota. A well respected race, it has hosted the USAT Duathlon National Championships in past years, and was a USAT section qualifier for the ITU Worlds this year. Approximately 440 signed up for the event, interestingly there were about 50 entrants over the age of 60. The lengths were 5k, 33k, 5k. The podium awards consist of a polished red granite apple, symbolic of the granite mining in the area.
This has been an awkward spring for Minnesota, with the ice staying in the lake well into late April. The forecast was for 50 degrees and showers, slightly warmer than the local lake temperatures. At least it was a duathlon and not a triathlon. And, it did not rain on our parade, but remained cool, overcast with slight winds and conducive for fast times....
