With his win at Green Lake Sprint and podium finishes at Big Lake and Young Life, Fargo's AJ MANNING (photo L) was the slam-dunk recipient of the Most Improved honor last season. We're glad to hear that he plans to race on the Minnesota side of the Red River in 2021:

Hi MTN,

I'm currently my plans are to race Des Moines 70.3, Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee and Madison WI 70.3. I will then add in 2-3 local Minnesota races as well just not decided on which ones quite yet. - AJ

ANDY ZABEL (photo R) enjoyed a breakout year in 2019. His career resume boasts 11 multisport wins, four of which were posted in '19. He can't wait to race in 2021...

Making Off-Season Strength Training Fun...

 kbellsquats.jpg

By Kate Ligler (triathlete.com)

Every Sunday afternoon I sit down in my home office prepping for next week’s clients directly in front of one of my favorite quotes:

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

While George Bernard Shaw has many famous expressions, the words “grow old” in this particular quote could be replaced by any number of phrases directly relevant to a triathlete.

We lose motivation when sessions get long or boring. We aggravate old niggles when our training is out of balance. We plateau with lack of variability. I have found few in this sport who aren’t striving to remain youthful, vibrant, and competitive as they age. So if you’re one of these athletes, now’s your time...

Numb Feet, Garbage Trucks & Renewed Confidence...

Hits Sarasota 2021 Race Report.
After the way IMFL ended I knew I needed to race again, to gain experience (this was my second 70.3), hopefully have a good race experience, and gain confidence. So I decided to enter Hits Sarasota. A couple of my athletes were already signed up to do the 70.3 and Olympic distances, so I thought this would be a great race to do too!

Race morning:
It was 42 degrees at the 8am start. The wind was relatively calm compared to the couple days before the race. The sun was out! It was going to be a beautiful day to race! I was a little concerned about being too cold on the bike so I brought a long sleeve shirt to wear over my kit and put my toe warmers on my bike shoes.

I quickly got my gear situated in transition, got on my wetsuit and then kept warm in the car until race time.

Swim: The swim was two laps counterclockwise in a rowing basin. Last year’s swim was a bit long at 2300 yds but they shortened it this year. I’m not sure why. Garmin devices showed different distances but averaged at about 1500 yds. We lined up on a small beach about 5 minutes before the start and went off two at a time off a doc. I was shaking and shivering as we waited for the start and couldn’t feel my feet already! ...

Swenson Wins HITS-Sarasota Sprint...

kylehits1.png

HITS-SARASOTA SPRINT - Duluth's SHYANNE MCGREGOR was not the only Minnesotan who rocked socks at HITS-Sarasota last weekend. While she was busy crushing the women's course record in the half IM competition, 2019 Junior of the Year, and the only male teen ever to earn a spot on Team MInnesota (2020), KYLE SWENSON, 19, was outrunning talented Iowan REECE LINDER, the man who beat a stellar group of guys at  Maple Grove Olympic in 2018, en route to a victory in the sprint race.

Third fastest out of the water in the 147-finisher event, he then out-transitioned his rivals. A strong bike split wasn't quite enough to catch Linder, who has concentrated on cyling the last two seasons, but another Kevin O-Connor-esque quick transition, followed by a 16:25 5K, the fastest run split of  the day, delivered Swenson to the finish line in 58:15, 17-seconds in front of runner-up Linder.

Kyle and Reece were the only athletes to crack the elite one-hour mark....
