Race Coverage - Taggart Downare picked up his fourth victory of the season and fifth of his career at the 4th annual Kickin'Leaves Duathlon yesterday. His CR-crushing time was 58:17 and his margin over runner-up Ryan Herzog was an adipose 4:04. Tara Makinen, who will submit a race report in a few days, won the women's race by a similarly plump margin. The Grand Rapids event was our state's final multisport event of the year....

Race Coverage - We were not at Iron Girl Bloomington yesterday, but Steve Stenzel was. We shamelessly filched his race coverage and a cool photo he posted on his great WEBSITE. The pic features Jenny Wilcox and her signature compression socks, and Thunder Bay, Ontario's wonderful Beth Shipston, who is one of the coolest people you'll ever meet. Say hi to her the next time you see her, okay? Do you find it odd that Beth cut the shoulders out of her long sleeve tech shirt? Notice also that Jenny, who won the race, of course, is a mid-foot striker, like a Tarahumara runner, while Beth is a heel-striker. Beth finished 6th on Sunday.
The sun was shining over chilly Bloomington, MN yesterday at the Aflac Iron Girl Duathlon. Around 1,400 women were pre-registered, but only around 1000 finished - the cool morning maybe kept some people away. The race consisted of a ...

Race Coverage - Former Infantile Alcoholic, Patrick Parish (photo) posted his 10th victory of the 2010 season this morning at the USAT National Sprint Championships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Patrick finished a totally respectable 11th overall the day before at AG Nationals (Olympic Distance). PP is one of only two male Minnesotans to record double-digit wins in a single season in at least the last 15 years. (Or ever? Tony Schiller may be a member of the 10+ club. We'll check on this and get back to you.) The other--SURPRISE!--is David Thompson, who won 11 races in 2007.
Parish's 59:06 was the only sub-1-hour clocking of the day. Second placing Craig Robinson of Palto Alto, California turned in a 1:00:56. Robinson finished 31st...

Race Coverage - Two Minnesotans were crowned National Champions this morning at the USAT Nationals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Matthew Payne (photo) won the 30-34M division and placed 13th overall. Bob Powers, 86, won the 85+ category. Eight of our state's 15 finishers landed automatic Team USA invitations for next year's ITU World Championships in Beijing, China. Several others should receive passdown invites. Minnesota and California were the only state's that placed three athletes in the men's Top 25.
Winning the overall crowns were Indiana's Kaleb VanOrt, who also won Du Nationals this season, and Floridian Mandy McLane, who finished 2nd in the polling behind Apple Valley's Cathy Yndestad for USAT Athlete of the Year in 2009. Finishing 2nd for the women was former Minnesotan Cindi Bannink, now of Madison., Wisconsin.
