JOE ADRIAENS (photo L)- As usual at Texas Ironman, times were very fast, and Minnesota's runner-up for the Most Improved award in 2017, Joe Adriaens, was one of the fast guys. The 30-year-old from Elk River, now a member of Every Man Jack, arguably the most talent-rich national tri team, popped an 8:58:59 last weekend, which is almost twenty minutes better than his debut 9:18:04 at IM FLorida last Fall. Joe will blog about his experience soon, and MTN will repost.
VICKI OSTENDORF - Rocking an awesome Pink-like white mohawk, this 53-year-old fitness coach from St. Paul, crushed her divisional competition at the prestigious St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Florida, last Sunday. We wish that she would race more often, as she certainly deserves to be mentioned alongside Cheryl Zitur, Julia Weisberger, Christel Kippenhan, Tracy Serreyn et al, who are recognized as our state's "Fast and Fabulous" 50+ women. That elite group will grow significantly this season as Jody Quesnell, Ann Snuggerud and Anne Grabowski have recently aged-up.
CHRISTINA ROBERTS - On a whim, which is not CR's typical style, Christina made a last second decision to fly to Bermuda last weekend to compete in the ITU World Triathlon, where she placed 8th among the amateur women. Next stop for her is Escape From Alcatraz. She rocked out there in 2014, finishing 6th female amateur and winning her AG against a stellar field....

The 10th Falls Duathlon was raced on Saturday. All of us at MTN hoped that this first outdoor multi of 2018 would set the tone for what we believe, starts the cyclical recovery for Minnesota mutltisport we are all hoping for and expecting....

“The forecast is gonna be what?” I asked.
“40 degrees, 25-35mph headwind, and heavy rain,” Nicholas responds solemnly.
“We’re screwed.”
2 days later I found myself in the pit of misery (no dilly dilly to be had) sloshing my way through the suburbs of Boston. I went out too fast, wore too little clothing, and was drenched to my core. At about mile 22 my body went from racing to survival mode. Glad I was able to kind of hang on and make it to the finish line. Upon reaching the finish line, medical personnel took care of me because I was shaking so bad. I'm so thankful for the volunteers and staff. I'm also overwhelmed by all of the support I received from family and friends. Huge thanks to Katie Braam Paquette, Zach Barrett, and Christina Roberts for flying out and spectating in the weather....
Minnesotans are "Boston Strong!"

ED. Weather conditions for the Boston Marathon last Monday were nothing short of yucky. Cold (mid 30s), driving rain, VERY windy. For almost everyone, PR dreams were put on hold. Here, we are posting words on the performances of a few of the MInnesotans who ran. And we encourage other Minnesota participants to comment on MTN's Facebook page, or use the COMMENTs feature below, to let us know how your fared.
From Duluth's TIFFANY KARI (photo) - I made it! I finished the Boston Marathon in what was said to be the worst race conditions in 100 years! Up to 30 mph headwinds, 40 degrees, consistent rain with occasional heavy downpours that became more frequent as we approached the finish line. It was as if Mother Nature was giving us a Grand Finale. It was ridiculous! I had to chuckle. It was the slowest on record in 40 years and I know why. 😉
On another high note I was also lucky enough to run with retired Olympic medalist Meb and his 3 hour pace group for the first 15 miles!!! A once in a lifetime!!! He won New York in 2012 and Boston in 2014 amongst many other honors. He came out to honor a young boy killed in the Boston bombing. ...

ED. On Sunday we received these words from Lynn Overvoorde, who with her daughter Mia, did all four of the YWCA Indoor Tris. On April 8, Lynn did the long event and Mia did the mini.
Hello MTN -- Sorry for not responding earlier to your request. This snow has me disoriented...
Dan W. Rocks at YWCA Finale...

As we mentioned in yesterday's post, the April 8 season finale of the YWCA INDOR TRI SERIES enjoyed a record turn-out. One hundred and fourteen athletes finished, thirty-four more than the previous attendance record.
Leading the way in the long course (600yd - 12 -5K) event, unsurprisingly, was seasoned vet DAN WESTERHAUS, whose 49:08 was a season, perhaps even an event, record. Dan is a totally cool guy who is into Skijoring with his German Shepherd, Niko. He has eclectic musical taste and loves adult cartoons, like "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons."
Taking 2nd place, also not surprisingly, is 2017 Minnesota Junior of the Year runner-up CARTER DEICHMAN, 17. Carter, a soft-spoken young man with great hair, popped a 51:20, a junior record.
Finishing 3rd in the long race was YWCA Indoor stalwart BRIAN ZAMBONI, who posted these other impressive results here: 1st on January 22, 4th on February 18, 3rd on March 18. His 53:21 on April 8 was his personal best.
The long course women were led by MARIA CHUI, who turned in a 54:09. We'd love to tell you more about her, but we were unable find anything online.
Second and third respectively in the women's long event were earned by MEG KELLEY and JENNY BREEN. Kelly won the first two YWCA Indoor Tris, though her time--54:41 on April 8, was a PR for the Series.
Breen, 52, is an avid endurance athlete with impressive results in running, outdoor tri and nordic sking....
