club-guys.gifDuTri Men Sweep Minnewaska Podium: A Tri-Perspective:

An intertwining tale of caffeinated tweenage bribey, bike mechanicals, and running scared;

aka a perfect day of racing.

By Ryan Wippler (and Andy Zabel, Jesse Shaw

Jesse Shaw (photo on L):  The morning of the 2015 Minnewaska Triathlon started like any other race morning... early!  After a short 45 minute drive I peaked the edge of the hillside into Glenwood and could see wispy fog blanketing the fields around town.  It was going to be a fast race: the sky was clear and there was zero wind.  The last time I raced Minnewaska was in 2012 and the waves were so bad during the swim it felt like an ocean swim; on the bike, we coasted uphill but had to pedal down it!  Ok, maybe it wasn't that bad, but it appeared the weather was going to cooperate this year.  As I parked and unloaded my gear, I found myself wondering who would be showing up to the race this year....

NYC Triathlon Race Report - I want to start out with a couple thanks.  First a big thanks to Gear West for getting my bike back into perfect form.  After my bike crash I had some damage to the cockpit/aero bar on my bike and needed a new one.  Changing this out involved rewiring my brakes and shifters which is not a small task!  My bike was back in perfect form just before NYC, thanks guys!  A second thanks goes to my college friend Emma for letting Patrick and I crash/move in to her place in NYC.  Her apartment was only about a mile from the start of the race which was incredibly convenient.  Thank you Emma!

I’m going to try changing up my race reporting we’ll see how it goes.  Here’s my thoughts on the race:

"It's Gorgeous up Here"....

DKT-BREW.gifBy John Nowacki (duluthnewstribune.com)

David Thompson showed a visible hitch in his step when he began the running portion of the 29th annual Brewhouse Triathlon on Saturday at Island Lake, a product of an ankle injury he suffered playing with his 3-year-old son at a playground.
But even Thompson on a bum leg is better than most triathletes on their best day.

Thompson, of St. Paul, cruised to a course record, covering the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40K bike and 10K run in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 11 seconds, good for his 99th career victory. He now holds the current course record and at the Brewhouse’s previous Pike Lake course.

Bridget McCoy of St. Paul won the women’s race in 2:14:09....

I am not really sure how this happened, but it is July 22nd.  More than half the summer is over but it has been jam packed full of fun and adventure.

I  really wanted this year's race season to be relatively easy and not full of pressure.

My plan has been to do some new races and events, revisit some old favorites that I haven't done for a while and sprinkle in a few favorites.

So far, so good.  It has been nice to pull back a bit on training intensity this year and to work on resting and rehabbing my hip a bit.  I've also made some new tri and running friends, which is always a plus....

The Uphill Sprint Tactic...

dave-external-hyd.gifHoot Lake Triathlon 2015

By Thomas Anderson III

On Saturday morning at the Hoot Lake Triathlon in Fergus Falls I got to enjoy a front row seat in watching an excellent triathlete walk away with a win. When David Jensen (photo) came out of the saddle to accelerate uphill I'm sure I could see his bike frame bend from the effort.  The tactics of an uphill sprint mid-course worked. Jenkins' surge on the bike, along with a great run on a hilly course, was enough to build a gap that neither Matthew Burrell nor I could bridge.  Jensen’s uphill strategy helped seal his third win at the Hoot Lake Triathlon, and he did so with room to spare! His finishing time of 1:04:48 was the 3rd fastest time in 23 years of course history....

Hosch Hammers...

walker-swim.gif6th WALKER TRIATHLON - Being the first of your gender to cross the finish line does not always mean that you've won the race.

Last Saturday, Matt Radniecki and Jacquelyn Bacigalupi (pronounced "bah-chee-gah-loop-pee," we think?) were the first man and woman to cross the finish line on the scenic western shoreline of Leech Lake's Walker Bay. They were, in golf parlance, clubhouse leaders. Talented athletes in later waves could rob the twosome, who shared the Winner's Circle the previous weekend at Heart of the Lakes Sprint, of their titles....
