LAKE WACONIA PREVIEW - The LWT, one of America's awesomest sprint tris, will happen next Sunday and we want to encourage those who haven't signed up yet to do so at their earliest convenience. In case you didn't know, there are no multisport races in Minnesota on the weekend of July 2-3, so, if you want to get in a race before July 9-10, when your choices include Timberman, Minneapolis, Graniteman Clearwater and Elysian, then you need to register for the LWT. Online reg. closes on Friday at 11:59 PM. Walk-up registration will be available on race morning ...

LAKE MINNETONKA TRIATHLON XIII Preview - Few tris and dus are immune to trends. Most races have endured reduced attendances for the last four or five years. Those events remain on the calendar because they're optimistic that the sport will experience a resurgence in the near future. We're optimist, too.
A couple of races, however, appear to be basically immune to downward trends. One is Northwoods. Another is the Lake Minnetonka Triathlon.
What elevates the LMT in this comparison is the fact that its enrollment ceiling (600) is twice as high as Northwoods. Sure, neither race fills as quickly as it used to, but both consistently get their numbers....

ROCHESTERFEST VIII - Great weather is forecast for the Rochester area next Sunday and event producers are intent on providing a great racing experience for the expected 300+ athletes. We highly recommend this event and encourage those who are on the fence about registering to lean to the sign up side.
Because it's fun to predict stuff, we are going to share some prognosticatory musings. Based on the entrant list we were sent, we think that the Top 3 men in the Olympic race will be: 1. Patrick Parish, 2. Kris Spoth, 3. Kevin O'Connor. All three of these guys have victories under their competitive belts this year. (Kevin is a two-time RochesterFest amateur champ.)
We are confident that Kortney Haag will prevail in the women's competition. She's healthy and fit, and her victorious performance at Buffalo (2:10:08) two weeks ago portends a great year for the 37-year-old former Minnesota Rookie of the Year (2008) and Most Improved (2009) winner....

LIBERTY HALF & OLYMPIC - We are anxious to see how Saturday's races at Lake Rebecca unfold. There are some long course newcomers, like Wade Cruser and Hanna Grinaker, that we predict will shake things up like a ten-point-0 on the Richter.
Guys like three-time Superior Man champ, Sean Cooley, 2011 winner Dan Arlandson, Iowa's Justin Herrick, last year's runner-up, 2015 Most Improved nominee Steve Morris, and Colorado transplant Nate Ansbaugh (photo L), who rocked a 3rd place finish at Gear West Du last month, are expected to set the pace, and there's always a few Canadian dudes that crash the Top 10, nevertheless we believe that Cruser will podium....

BUFFALO TRIATHLON PREVE - There are no shortage of outstanding triathlon venues in Minnesota. In fact, we doubt that any other state has as many great tri sites as ours does. It just doesn't get any better than Timberman's Sugar Lake venue, Heart of the Lakes in Annandale and the new site of the Brewhouse at Island Lake. In the Metro, there's Lake Marion, Lake Waconia and Lake Minnetonka, among so many others. And the Waseca Tri in southern MInnesota is special, too.
And there are sixty other great tri/du sites in our state.
At, or near the top of the "GVL" (Great Venues List) is Sturges Park in Buffalo, home of the Buffalo Triathlon, which will celebrate its 13th anniversary next Sunday. That place looks like it was designed with triathlon in mind. It's picturesque and shady, and features an awesome amphitheatre. It is not only a great venue for racers, there isn't a more spectator-friendly race site anywhere....
