More Than Just a Pain in the Butt...

hamstring.gifInjuries suck. It's hard enough for the MTN Guys to see so many of our multisport friends endure owies and boo-boos. It's worse when they are actually sidelined by such things.

In 2012 we were getting excited about a masters athlete named Leslie Englert. It was her first year in the sport and she had already won a race (Maple Grove Sprint) and rocked Top 10 efforts at all the Graniteman Series races. We thought she was only a year or two away from MMA nominations.

Then an evil thing called Hamstring Tendonosis happened. This stuff requires a lot more than PT and ant-inflammatories, so Leslie got Prolo Therapy (which is awesome), which along with lots of PT, enabled her to run again.

After a painful season in 2013, low-lighted by medium-dazzle performances, we were anxious to see Leslie return to form. When we sought her permission to write stuff...

Resilience is a Choice...

ruth-headshot.gifBy Ruth Brennan Morrey

Following Panama 70.3 in February, Texas 70.3 was destined to be my second race of my second pro season. High hopes for a podium placing existed as recent performances and training data were telling me that I was pretty darn strong at this point in the early season.  Over the past year, improvements in all three disciplines have changed my mental approach and confidence to racing.  Entering and finishing a race being happy to have placed in the top 10 and admiring those who place ahead of me no longer exists.  This season, I have arrived at a new level of endurance, strength, and drive.  I have a heightened desire for ‘come from behind’ racing excellence by slamming it down on my dangerous run! Last weekend in Galveston, this hunger was palpable, however, I had no results to take home. I was disqualified after I had reached the finish line. ....

Bunten Breaks Out...

gaby.gifCOLLEGIATE NATIONALS - MTN congratulates Forest Lake's Gaby Bunten (photo L) and Minneapolis' Jessica Findlay on their Top 50 performances at the ultra-competitive Collegiate Nationals in Tempe, Arizona last Saturday. Racing for Iowa State, Bunten threw down a personal best 2:12:26, highlighted by a great swim (20:22). Her previous PR was a 2:19, set in Florida last season.

It should be noted that bike course in Tempe was 36K. Even so, Bunten demonstrated significant improvement and should be a force on the regional racing scene this summer.

UM's Findlay was coming off a 26th place effort the previous day in the Collegiate Draft Legal Sprint Champs. On Saturday she placed 46th in 2:14:16....

Rabino, Gorman & Findlay Rock at College Nationals......

melanie-tattoo.gifCOLLEGIATE NATIONALS - Collegiate Sprint Nationals were staged last Friday in Tempe, Arizona. This highly-competitive Draft Legal race was won by Ian Boggs of Indiana University, whose dad, Bryan, was a former pro and for almost two decades was arguably Indiana's premier amateur triathlete, and Taylor Spivey of Cal Poly. Spivey, a tremendous swimmer, placed 2nd behind Heather Lendway at AG Nationals in Milwaukee last August and has her sights set on a pro career.

University of Minnesota athletes performed admirably on Friday. Leading the way for the Gopher Girls was Melanie Rabino (photo L), who placed 15th, and Jessica Findlay (Minneapolis), who placed 26th. Melanie has a tattoo and is dating a guy named Brad. She lived in France for a while and speaks three languages--English, French and Spanish. Musically, she's into The Lumineers and Mogli. She must be super cool because she read "The Pillars of the Earth," one of the greatest, and longest, historical novels ever.

We don't know much about Finlay, other than to note that she won the Collegiate Division at Life Time Maple Grove last year and knows Devon Palmer personally....
