"Izzy's First Tri is in the Books"....

YWCA Indoor Triathlon #2 - Every Sunday, my 16-year old daughter and I have a standing swim date. Rain, sunshine, blizzard, or ice storm, we rarely miss our Sunday time at the Y (my office is just 2 blocks from YMCA Gaviidae, so this is our pool of choice, and the poolside hot tub and sauna make it more enticing in the winter months). We are recreational freestyle swimmers...no flip turns, very “marginal” form, and plenty of back stroke, pull buoys/kickboards, and we’re basically there to get in an easy no-impact workout on a running day off. It’s great bonding time for us, and an opportunity to let the hot tub jets offer us a free massage.
A few weeks ago, after one of these swims, my daughter said to me “Mom, can you sign us up for an Indoor Tri?” Music to this mom triathlete’s ears. Izzy is a high school cross country runner and has recently found biking on our kinetic trainer in the basement to work well as a cross train day. YWCA INDOOR TRIATHLON #2 - Like the first race in this four-event series, last weekend's YWCA Indoor Tri was well attended (91 finishers), though the female/male ratio is still in a bit out-of-whack. In January, women outnumbered men 70 - 23. Last Sunday, that ratio was basically identical (70 - 21).
We'd love to see more guys at these cool events.
Let's talk about the "Long" event first. A pair of transplanted New York staters took the Top 2 spots, with a local woman returing to the podium....

TRI U MAH – A record (we think?) 213 athletes completed the 90-minute Tri U Mah, which celebrated it's 16th anniversary on February 8-9....

ASIAGO, Italy — Amateur athlete Sheri Schrock raced her way to a top result for Team USA on Sunday with a bronze medal in her age group at the 2020 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships. Schrock was joined by eight other athletes who represented Team USA, four of them also earning top-10 finishes....

2009 – Suzie Finger - Suzie had a decade-long career that was upended by a serious bike accident. She claims to be retired, but we hope she changes her mind. She was named Female Triathlete of the Year in 2015, and was twice named Minnesota Duathlete of the Year (2011, 2013).
2008 - Kortney Haag - Kort is still an active and very successful triathlete. She has won more half IM races (9!) than any other Minnesota woman.
2007 - Jeanne Fleck - A back injury derailed Jeanne tri / du career after just a couple of years, a period during which she was named Rookie of the Year (2007), Most Improved (2008) and Master of the Year (2008). She is still an avid cyclist and nordic skier.
2006 - Marta Lewinski - Health issues cut Marta's tri career short.
2005 - Jeremy Sartain & Sarah Kolpin - Jeremy's tri career was curtailed by a nearly catastrophic motorcycle accident. Sarah moved to Pittsburgh, became a doctor and is now totally into fishing....
