Ruth Brennan Morrey’s triathlon sporting history is certainly a nontraditional one! A former Division I student-athlete at University of Wisconsin-Madison, RBM was recruited to the Big 10 Badger soccer powerhouse program, played midfield/forward, and co-captained the team in 1998. College summer months were spent playing for the Chicago Cobras semi-professional soccer team. After four years of NCAA eligibility, RBM took a marathon training class to stay in shape and finished third at the Madison Marathon with a 3:15 time. Intending to break the 3 hour barrier at Grandma’s marathon in 1999, she mistakenly qualified for the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials (2:48:20) instead. At the Olympic trials in Colombia, South Carolina, she placed 34th/210 qualifiers, with a time of 2:48:17. ...

2017 MINNESOTA MULTISPORT AWARDS - FEMALE MOST IMPROVED - Using the words "Most Improved" to describe this category is a bit misleading. What the MMA Comittee is measuring is how much emerging athletes are moving among their elite peers, especially as it relates to placement on Team MInnesota. An athlete who has never made the team, but has improved enough to make it this year, is a prime cadidate for consideration, as is that member of Team Minnesota that moves up the ladder in a significant way. Also considered are athletes that were basically "off the radar" in previous seasons but are now flirting with a spot on the Team.
Today, in alpha order, we are revealing the Female Most Improved nominees for 2017:
- GABY BUNTEN, 25, Forest Lake
Gaby has placed as high as 5th on Team Minnesota in the past, but will place much higher this year. Upward movement within the Top five is a big deal.
Here are Gaby's 2017 competitive highlights:
- 1st @ Minneapolis - 2:08:34 - This effort is being considered for a POY nomination.
- 1st @ South Beach Olympic (FL) ....

2017 MINNESOTA MULTISPORT AWARDS - Voting for TRIATHLETES CHOICE RACE OF THE YEAR has concluded. The finalists were determined by "Percent of Participation" results. For instance, if a race with 500 race day entrants, including each relay member, receives 50 votes, then that event was supported by 10% of its entrants. A race with 1500 entrants would need to receive at least 151 votes (10.1%) in order beat the smaller race, etc.
