Ligamentous Injuries...

ankle-sprian.gifBy Dr. Michael Williams

What Is A Sprain, Is There Anything Other Than Rest That Can Help?

A sprain occurs when ligaments are exposed to extreme pressure and are overstretched or torn. This ligament sprain is analogous to a strain of a muscle or pulled muscle, except that ligaments are less vascular than tendons and muscles, meaning that sprains can take longer to heal. Overstretched and torn ligaments are painful and often lead to other parts of your body not functioning properly due to compensation....

Getting Sick Isn't Always a Bad Thing...

sick-in-bed-300x200.gifBy Suzanne (Sooz) Flannigan, PhD (triathlon.competitor.com)

No one likes to get that annual nasty flu or cold that lasts a week or more and comes roaring back just as you think you are getting better. Not a single person I coach or train with likes to miss training, not even a single day. But the reality is, sometimes you get that nasty bug and it takes you down. You miss a day of training, and another and then another, and all the while the voice of worry is ramping up in your head. You worry that it’s you, that you are just not being tough enough. You imagine at least a dozen of your training buddies who would push through the congestion, the headaches, the fatigue. You fret about missing the next run session because you haven’t been running that well lately and you know you need more running to improve. You worry that after three days, you have lost all the fitness you have gained in the last six months of training and that you will never again swim as fast as you did last month.Instead of getting depressed, anxious, frustrated, impatient, or demoralized when that nasty bug hits, consider adjusting your perspective about what is happening. Shift your thinking and intentionally try to make the most of an otherwise unpleasant situation. June Athletes of the Month...

MTN and Excelsior Running present their ATHLETES OF THE MONTH for June 2016: *

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

Hanna Grinaker, 28, St. Paul & Kris Spoth, 28, White Bear Lake

In her other two efforts--Liberty Half (4:47:07 despite riding long!) and Buffalo Olympic (2:10:58)--she placed 2nd. Several other women raced brilliantly, most notably Gaby Bunten (Wins at Trinona and RochesterFest) and Suzie Fox (Wins at Pigman Sprint and Copper Creek), but Hanna's meteoric emergence was unlike anything we've ever seen....

By Erin Klegstad (sweetsweatlife.com)

Liberty Half Race Report - I ignored the number one piece of racing advice – never use anything new on race day – during my 2016 season opener. And, while I was never planning on “racing” Saturday’s Liberty 70.3 thanks to feeling off (hello, period headache), a brand spankin’ new tri bike and just coming off five weeks of no running, I’d be lying if I said I was pleased with my performance. When you have high expectations of yourself no matter what, it stings a little when you’re not where you want to be.

But, head down, do the work and onward! There are two more 70.3s on this summer’s schedule, and you can bet the results will be better :)  ...
