suzFrom The Ashes

By Suzie Fox (suz--news.blogspot.com)

Gear West Du Race Report - On April 27 I crashed my road bike and hit my throat really hard on the cockpit between the handlebars. I ended up with a severe injury to my trachea and my left foot didn't unclip right away, it caught a little and I tore my hip flexor. Then I ended up with a strained hamstring, groin, and adductor all on the same side as the hip flexor as a result of compensation just trying to walk and do the little non training things to get through the day like put pants on and get in and out of the car. I had been putting in solid 20-22 hour training weeks and just three weeks earlier on April 6 I did a 22.26 mile run, then suddenly my life had been reduced to not being able to pick up a dog poop or swallow food and water without pain, let alone run....

Soggy Sunday...

soggyGear West Du XXI - MTN contacted Suzie Fox after she won 21st edition of the Gear West Duathlon on Sunday. We asked if she was going to blog about her experience. This was her reply:

"It was muddier and swampier than ever which made it all the more fun! New course too. I will try to write something up in the next day or so. Wasn't sure that I would be okay to race but it worked out. Hope Albert Lea had better weather than we did." She followed this with another comment: "Really impressive race for Jared Smith, he's improved."

Smith (photo below) finished 4th against a Who's Who field. He placed 5th here in 2012. Guy's gettin' good....

It Was Very Windy...

Land Between the Lakes Triathlon - Chap Achen, who's parents deserve serious style points for naming him Chap, placed 3rd here in 2012, finishing not far behind talented young guys, Sam Janicki, who does look a lot like Andy Samberg, and Kyle Serreyn, who looks like the Russian assassin in "The Bourne Ultimatum." The Chapster, who resides in lovely Red Wing, set a resounding masters record on that cold, windy and wet day.

Last Sunday, Achen returned to Albert Lea and won the race outright, giving him at least two wins since turning 40 a few years back. (He also won at Wingman last year, doing so in CR time.) He not only won, he crushed his MR ..

Lovaas Notches #28, Lendway Stellar...

heather(Photo - Heather Lendway turned in a totally super effort on Saturday.)

Blaine Triathlon - Despite the crappy weather that forced a late start, a number of athletes managed to muscle through the rain, wind and slick, slow-to-zero mph turns and rewrite some records. The overall winners were awesome, each taking gluttonous bites from the CRs. For Brett Lovaas, his 1:09:15 was a flabby 4:30 faster than the men's winning time in 2012. The victory was the 28th of his impressive career.

Last year's Rookie of the Year, Heather Lendway, chewed an even more elephantine-ish chunk --7:05!--from the the previous women's mark on this .3 swim (59-degrees), 16.7 bike, 3.5 run. Her stellar 1:16:30 landed her in 5th place overall and delivered her to the finish line almost ten minutes ahead of the women's runner-up. Awesome performance. Her young career now boasts three victories, one 2nd and three 3rds. Making Team Minnesota in one's second year of racing is a monumental feat. We suspect that there will be a spot on the prestigious Team for Heather at season's end....
