Kort's Kona...

kort-and-fam.gifBy Kortney Haag

As I am sitting here contemplating foam rolling the thought of it terrifies me...I am not too sore in the legs but my body is sore from the beat up I took on my fall on the bike Saturday. Getting to Kona was a dream I have had since the first time I decided to do an Ironman. My first Ironman in 2012 at Wisconsin didn’t go as planned as I had GI issues through the whole run. I figured out what I needed to change in 2013 and placed first in my age group and second overall amateur that year. It is funny how things work out for a reason because in 2002 Derek and I came to Kona, HI for our honeymoon. Little did we know that the Ironman race was going on the next day. I still remember walking through the King Kamehameha hotel wondering what all these fit looking people were doing. We got up the next morning and watched the whole race unfold and were in awe of these amazing athletes. We didn’t get into the sport of triathlon for a long time after but I knew I wanted to come back and do this race someday. What is even more special is that this is our golden anniversary, for 12 years I have been married to my best friend....

Pros & Cons of Chattanooga...

devon-and-ruther.gifBy Devon Palmer (palmertri.wordpress.com)

The Gold Guys asked me to present a dynamic discussion of Ironman Chattanooga rather than a traditional rambling race report. Please enjoy these pros and cons from Ironman Chattanooga:

Pros:

Homestay: My homestay Alex was fantastic. A great homestay makes for a great weekend. He showed me around town and even braved the rain to make sure he caught me at the finish, even though I was coming through later than predicted. Can’t thank him enough. Alex, see you next September.

The Swim: The swim was all downstream. I went 9 minutes faster than my ridiculous swim from Louisville last year. It was the best. I’ve never swum that easy in a race before. Just sat at the back of the main pack. I was actually sharing a pair of feet with Trevor Wurtele and we swam face to face...

"A Simple Choice"....

ruth-chattanooga.gifBy Ruth Brennan Morrey (ruthbrennanmorrey.com)

2.4 mile swim, 116 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. Ten years ago, before my triathlon days, I watched curbside at Ironman Wisconsin and convincingly proclaimed that I have no desire to attempt that pathological distance. Well, things change, like one’s mental status ☺. Even after I started doing triathlons, a full Ironman continued to be completely unappealing.

Something did change, however. I was in Venice, Italy last year during the 2013 Kona World Championship, and remember vividly watching the exciting race unfold from half way around the world. Running better now than ever before, I texted my coach, Dr. Phil Skiba, the following day: “I’d like to take my run to Kona.” He quickly texted back, “Sounds good.” A simple choice has turned into a plan, and we are now charging ahead within the 2015 Kona qualification window. Of personal significance, next year the coveted world championship race will be held on the very...

"Fun Size" Duathlon...

cascade-falls-guys.gif(Photo - CFD medalists, from L to R: Tom Couillard, who's into Kacey Musgrave's music, the insanely handsome Ron Dockery, who had a "heart thing" a few years back, but he's fine now, Shelly Tschida, AKA "The Pride of Vadnais Heights," whose last name sounds like "cheetah," not "Shy-da" like the lake in North Dakota, and Michel Sanders, who has 34 teeth and is into "Westerny" stuff. Great folks!)

By Warren Peece

Cascade Falls Du - The final outdoor multisport race on the Minnesota calendar was last Saturday and it was a goodie. Not large, only 61 finishers, it was the special event equivalent of a "Fun Size" candy bar. Whatever it is that makes little candy bars more "fun" than the bigger ones, was probably what made the Cascade Falls Duathlon more fun ...
